We both went to graduate school at WVU in Morgantown, West Virginia. So, after spending six years exploring everything the city offers, we found some of the best restaurants in Morgantown. Morgantown has a little bit of everything to offer in terms of food. From international cuisine to classic American fare, you can find it all!

What is different about this post on the best restaurants in Morgantown is that we have tried (almost) ALL of them! There are a few restaurants on here that we never got to try but have been regularly recommended by other students and locals. So, here are the best places to eat in Morgantown!

Top Places to Eat in Morgantown, West Virginia

Best American fare Restaurants in Morgantown

Eat n’ Park

Eat n’ Park is a local chain diner in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Known for its smiley cookies, this restaurant will make you feel part of the community. At Eat n’ Park, you can get anything from breakfast food to dinner. During lunchtime, the salad bar is a great option for their homemade soups and build-your-own salads. But we love Eat n’ Park for its breakfast!

Apple Annie’s

Apple Annies is one of the best restaurants in Morgantown! This restaurant serves homestyle meals in large portions in a cozy atmosphere. Expect meals on the menu that seem to have come from your grandma’s recipe box. Dishes like cabbage rolls, fried chicken, chicken pot pie, pepperoni rolls, meatloaf, and hardy pasta are among their specialties. In addition to being a fantastic restaurant, Apple Annies is a full-service bakery with bread, cookies, pies, and cakes! We could never go to Apple Annies and not get dessert!

Beehive Cafe

The Beehive Cafe offers great boxed lunch deals if you want takeout. Each boxed lunch comes with a sandwich, a cookie, and a bag of chips. The packaging of the lunches is 1950s-themed, which is a nice touch. And the sandwiches are all creatively named after areas in Morgantown! Their sandwiches are made with homemade bread, fresh veggies, and meats. The Beehive is great for catered lunches, and they deliver!

Terra Cafe

Terra Cafe is a great option if you’re vegetarian! This cafe, located along the Mon River Trail, offers awesome vegetarian dishes, including breakfasts, sandwiches, soups, and entrees. They also have a bakery and cafe if you want coffee and pastries. Terra Cafe also has nonvegetarian options as well. In the evenings, Terra Cafe has a happy hour from 5-7 pm and often features live music.

Black Bear Burritos

Black Bear Burritos is famous in Morgantown for its delicious Mexican-inspired food, chill atmosphere, and live music. If you love burritos and want to try local brews, this is your place. Building our own burrito with an order of chips and queso is our favorite meal. In addition to burritos, you can get bowls, wraps, salads, and tacos. Black Bear also has a full-service bar with local beers on tap and an evening happy hour.

Dirty Bird

Move out of the way, Jersey Mikes; Dirty Bird is the best sandwich shop in Morgantown! Dirty Bird serves up piled-high sandwiches with fresh meats and toppings. The bread is incredibly fresh, and the toppings pair so well with the meats. When we order a sandwich, we usually don’t need to order a side because the sandwich is so large! Our favorites from Dirty Bird include the Hot Betty (Nashville hot chicken) and Monty Ray (club sandwich) sandwiches.

Crab Shack Carriba

Carb Shack Carriba has some of Morgantown’s most unique seafood dishes, like Paella Jambalaya and low country boil! The seafood is packed with flavor, and there are many options on the menu, from sandwiches to steamers to tacos to soups.

Von Blaze

Von Blaze is a recent addition to Morgantown’s restaurant scene! Von Blaze features an upscale take on American fare with classic sandwiches, hardy soups, and what they like to call “sophisticated drunk food.” Von Blaze also offers fry plates, where fries are piled high with toppings and sauces! In addition to their regular menu, Von Blaze serves brunch on the weekends.

Grandma’s Country Kitchen

Grandma’s Country Kitchen is a hidden gem in Morgantown! This small restaurant serves up big flavor in their country-style meals that will take you back to childhood dinners at your grandma’s house. Grandma’s Country Kitchen has daily specials.

Tutor’s Biscuit World

Tutor’s Biscuit World might be a fast food chain, but it serves up some of the hardiest breakfasts in Morgantown. Famous for its massive breakfast sandwiches on biscuits, Tutor’s is a great stop the morning after a WVU football game or a night out on High Street.

Best Italian Restaurants and Pizza in Morgantown

Oliverio’s Italian Restaurant

Every town seems to have its favorite local Italian restaurant. Oliverio’s is Morgantown’s classy Italian restaurant. Located at the Wharf along the Mon River, you can enjoy a delicious meal with a river view! The price tag is a little higher than most places in Morgantown, but it’s definitely worth it!

Pies and Pints

Pies and Pints is one of the many pizza restaurants in Morgantown, where you can enjoy some pizza and grab a craft beer. Pies and Pints is a West Virginia-founded pizza chain and has been voted one of the best!

Colasantes’s

Colasante’s is another Italian restaurant in Morgantown, but instead of going for the fine dining flare, it’s more homestyle. Expect larger portions and a more laid-back atmosphere.

Pug’s Homemade Italian

Pug’s Homemade Italian has some of the best pasta in Morgantown! This small, unassuming restaurant in a shopping plaza serves large portions with big flavors. You’re served a delicious giant garlic bun called the Giant Pug Loaf with your meal!

Lefty’s Place

If you like Detroit-style pizza, you have to try Lefty’s Place! Their square-cut thick-crust pizza is loaded with toppings, so you only need one slice to feel full! Traditional-style pizza is also offered in addition to calzones, salads, wings, and appetizers. You can also order pizza by the slice during lunchtime.

Best Breweries in Morgantown

Mountain State Brewing

Mountain State Brewing was one of our favorite breweries in Morgantown and one of the state’s oldest microbreweries. Mountain State is situated along the Mon River at the Warf. They feature a menu of bar fare, craft pizzas, awesome beers, and mixed drinks. Mountain State offers a seasonal drink menu and happy hour from 4-6.

Morgantown Brewing Company

Morgantown Brewing Company is an awesome brewpub in Morgantown! Morgantown Brewing Company offers a range of beers, excellent food, daily specials, and weekly social events, including trivia and bingo! They have excellent burgers, appetizers, chicken tenders.

Short Story Brewing

Short Story Brewing is a hidden gem brewery located 15 minutes outside of Morgantown. Short Story features a rotating selection of beers and food, so check their menu before going! The brewery is an intimate space for enjoying some drinks and a meal, and you can play board games and arcade games upstairs. During the summertime, the patio and firepit are open.

Chestnut Brew Works

Chesnut Brew Works is an intimate brewery with a range of beers, so you’re bound to find one you’ll like! The brewery doesn’t serve food, but allows you to bring your own. Chesnut Brew Works regularly advertises for hungry visitors to grab food from Phoenix Bakery, just a few blocks from the brewery. Phoenix Bakery serves pizza, pastries, and other baked goods.!

Best Ethnic and International Restaurants in Morgantown

Ogawa

Ogawa is hands down the best Japanese and Sushi Restaurant in Morgantown. For lunch, they have a great “Lunch Box” deal where you can get an entree with rice, shrimp tempura, salad, and a California Roll for less than $15! In addition to sushi, you can order from a diverse menu, including noodles, entrees, and more!

Chaang Thai

Chaang Thai is our favorite spot for Thai food in Morgantown. They have a diverse menu featuring Thai classics like drunken noodles and pad Thai. Chaang Thai has some of the fastest service we’ve seen in Morgantown. To order, you go to the iPad stations in the restaurant, place and pay for your order; then a server brings your food to your numbered table! Chaang Thai offers lunch specials, student discounts, and has outdoor seating.

El Pollon II

El Pollon is a hidden gem restaurant in Morgantown if you’re looking for fantastic chicken! This Peruvian restaurant features rotisserie chicken, authentic Peruvian entrees, breakfast, and burritos. The chicken meals are fantastic! The chicken is tender, well seasoned, and well-priced!

Super Red Bowl

Super Red Bowl is not your typical Asian restaurant or buffet. At Super Red Bowl, you are given a red bowl where you fill the bowl with raw veggies, meats, seasonings, and sauces, and then the kitchen cooks up your bowl with either rice or noodles! But the catch is everything must fit in the bowl, so it’s quite fun piling up your fillings high in the bowl. The staff at Super Red Bowl were incredibly nice the first time we went; they were so helpful in explaining how it worked. In addition to ordering the bowls, you can order entrees, sides, and sushi.

Tazitkis

Tazitskis is a fast-casual Greek restaurant chain serving up some of the best Greek dishes in Morgantown!

Los Mariachi’s

Los Mariachi’s is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Morgantown! Here you can find a wide array of burritos, fajitas, tacos, and combination Mexican meals. The margaritas here are always strong! Los Mariachi’s has three locations across Morgantown.

La Tapatia Market and Tacos

La Tapatia serves up some of the best tacos and Mexican food in Morgantown! This taco joint is actually located inside a Mexican grocery store, so you know it’s going to be legit! Here you can get tacos, burritos, tamales, and more!

Instanbul

Instanbul is Morgantown’s only Turkish restaurant featuring classics like babagannooj, hummus, gyros, wraps, lamb, and falafel.

China City Restaurant

China City Restaurant is the best Chinese takeout location in Morgantown! Here, you can order all your favorite American Chinese fare. The food is always delicious and flavorful; they have the best eggrolls in town!

Best Bars and Bar Food in Morgantown

Being a college town, Morgantown has no shortage of bars and bar food. In this section, we’re sharing our favorite bars and restaurants in Morgantown for bar fare!

Mario’s Fishbowl

Mario’s Fishbowl is famous for its fishbowl-style glasses for their drinks. Mario’s is a staple for university students and locals, with three locations across Morgantown. In addition to their big drinks, Mario’s has an extensive menu of bar fare.

Kegler’s Sports Bar and Lounge

Kegler’s Sports Bar and Lounge is one of Morgantown’s most famous restaurants and bars (it’s been nationally recognized!). Kegler’s features some of the best chicken wings and sauces! Our personal favorites were the bourbon Chipotle and Southwest! Kegler’s is a great spot to sit and enjoy watching a game over delicious food!

Crockett’s Lodge

Crockett’s Lodge was our favorite watering hole in Morgantown. This dive bar always has good food and drink specials in addition to their normal happy hour that runs from 5-7 pm. We enjoyed all of their fried appetizers like the fried mushrooms, the maca and cheese bites, and the beer cheese and pretzel! They also have excellent wings and allow you to mix the wing sauces.

Varsity Club

Varsity Club is right across the street from the Milan Puskar Stadium, so this spot is one of the best in town for pre-gaming a WVU game! When it’s not gameday, this sports bar serves up wraps, burgers, tacos, sandwiches, and massive fried fish sandwiches! We found Varsity Club during Lent for the fried fish and it was huge and amazing!

Iron Horse Tavern

Iron Horse Tavern is another awesome bar for delicious food, great brunch (with mimosas), and good vibes. Some of their home runs include pierogis, burgers, and grilled wings. This is a great spot to try some local beers and speciality cocktails.

Mountaineer Tap House

Mountaineer Tap House is a great place to try a range of craft beers, have some delicious bar fare, and watch a game. Some of Tap House’s best dishes include their burgers, wings, and vegan offerings. Mountaineer Tap House offers daily specials and happy hour as well.

Gene’s Beer Garden

Gene’s Beer Garden has been a long-standing staple in Morgantown for the college crowd. It’s the oldest running bar in the city and is known for its famous hotdog, live music, and friendly atmosphere.

Primanti Brothers

Primanti Brothers is one of our favorite spots in Morgantown for happy hour, late-night happy hour, and massive sandwiches! Happy Hour runs from 4-7 and 9-11 Monday through Friday. We love all of the food we’ve tried at Primanti’s, including their sandwiches, pizza, and fried appetizers. Primanti’s is a great spot to watch a bag or play trivia during the week.

Gibbie’s Pub and Eatery

Gibbie’s is a pub in downtown Morgantown featuring daily food and drink specials, cheap happy hours, and American fare. Gibbie’s is an excellent hangout for happy hours and late-night drinking alike!

Boston Beanery

With it’s laid-back and welcoming atmosphere, the Boston Beanery is a great spot for grabbing a drink, a good meal, and enjoying time out with friends. The Boston Beanery features a large menu consisting of sandwiches, burgers, pastas, and surf and turf.

The Apothecary Ale House and Cafe

The Apothecary has one of the largest craft beer selections in WV, with 30 rotating taps and 140 different bottles! So get ready to try some new beers if you go here! This laid-back joint also serves delicious sandwiches.

Best Fine Dining in Morgantown

Bartini Prime

Because Morgantown has so many awesome restaurants, we didn’t visit many fine-dining restaurants besides Bartini Prime. This steakhouse serves up delicious steaks, seafood, and sushi. The steaks are excellent cuts of meat, and the side dishes are large enough for two people to share easily. Bartini Prime offers specials throughout the week.

Sefano’s

Sefano’s is Morgantown’s premier Italian restaurant. Stefano’s menu features prime cuts of meat, seafood, pasta dishes, and an extensive wine list. Expect a dimly lit, fine-dining ambiance for this meal!

Best Bakeries and Cafes in Morgantown

Apple Annies

We mentioned Apple Annies earlier in this post, but we have to mention it again for our best bakeries in Morgantown list! Apple Annies has fantastic desserts, from cookies to breads to cakes to pies! Everything is made in-house and is super fresh! We loved getting our birthday cakes from Apple Annies. During the holidays, Apple Annies also offers dessert orders, so you can have a bit of Apple Annies at your dinner table for the holidays!

Almost Heaven Desserts and Coffee Shop

Almost Heaven Bakery is another great bakery in Morgantown for desserts, pies, cheesecakes, and cookies. In addition to their extensive dessert menu, you can get paninis, sandwiches, smoothies, milkshakes, and acai bowls. And don’t forget to add a coffee with you meal!

The Grind

The Grind is a staple in Morgantown for university students to get their morning coffee. The Grind is conveniently located next to the downtown campus and features a range of specialty drinks and some quick snacks.

The Cupcakerie

The Cupcakerie is a bakery in Morgantown specializing in cupcakes! You can either buy individual cupcakes or a mixed bunch! Throughout the year, seasonal cupcakes are offered as well.

The Venerable Bean

The Venerable Bean is a great place to grab pastries or a takeout lunch. They have a rotating menu of hot soups, bagels, cookies, pies, and pepperoni rolls.

Morgantown is best accessed by driving! Morgantown is located just 1.5 hours south of Pittsburgh.

Absolutely! Morgantown is a great place to visit because it’s a rural college town. The town gets the best of being surrounded by students, local businesses, delicious restaurants, and awesome placess to hike.

No! Morgantown is very affordable to visit. Food and drinks are reasonably priced and hotels are affordable. Hotel prices increase when there are major events at the University.
