Steeler’s Training Camp is one of the biggest annual events that occur in Latrobe, a small town in the Laurel Highlands. Every year, people from all over the country come to Latrobe to watch the Steelers during training camp. Steeler’s training camp is hosted at Saint Vincent College and you can watch the team practice and scrimmage. Historic Things to Do Near Latrobe

Hanna’s Town

Discover the Pennslyvania frontier at Historic Hanna’s Town, a reconstructed colonial village near Greensburg. Once the location of the first courts west of the Alleghenies, Hanna’s Town was the county seat before that privilege was given to Greensburg. Located on county park land and operated by the Westmoreland County Historical Society, the village includes the reconstructed Hanna’s Tavern and Courthouse, three relocated log houses, and a reconstructed Revolutionary War fort. The property will soon be home to the Westmoreland History Education Center and the 20th century farmhouse will also open to the public.

Fort Ligonier

Walk in the footsteps of early American heroes like George Washington at Fort Ligonier, a reconstructed fort from the French and Indian War. Fort Ligonier was part of a chain of forts that supported British troops as they planned their successful capture of France’s Fort Duquesne from the French; located in modern-day Pittsburgh. Explore the site and a museum detailing the history of the French and Indian War.

Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve

If you have some time to kill before or after Steeler’s training camp, stop over at the Winner Palmer Nature Reserve. This nature reserve has family friendly and accessible trails through gardens and wildflower fields. At the Nature Center Barn, you can learn about local animals and wildlife.

Twin Lakes Park

Twin Lakes Park in Greensburg is another great place to go for a walk. These two lakes have fit a trail around them and a playground. You can also rent paddle boats! Twin Lakes Park makes for a great place to have a picnic.

Westmoreland Museum of American Art

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a rainy day activity. The museum highlights painting, sculptures, and photography from the colonial era to modern time. It was recently remodeled and includes state-of-the-art galleries. Try your hand at drawing, painting, or another skill in their art studio programs.

Lincoln Highway Experience

The Lincoln Highway was the nation’s first coast-to-coast highway that stretched from New York City to San Francisco in 1913. This route that changed American tourism forever, as a new means for travel and vacationing by automobile became available. The Lincoln Highway Experience offers visitors a peek into the highway’s history and significance through photographs, documentaries, and exhibitions.

Ligonier Railroad Museum

The Ligonier Valley Rail Road Museum is located near Ligonier and is housed in the original Ligonier Valley Rail Road station from 1896.  The Museum has a collection of over 3,000 historic items related to the railroad industry in Ligonier and the Laurel Highlands. This small museum makes for a nice visit if you’re looking to learn some local history!
