Weekend Getaway Camping Trip to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

Did you know there is another Grand Canyon in the United States!?

All you have to do is visit the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon! Located in north-central Pennsylvania, the Pine Creek Gorge is a 47-mile gorge carved by Pine Creek into the Allegheny Plateau. You can see the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon from multiple points along the 47 miles! Northcentral Pennsylvania is full of is beautiful state parks, state game lands, and peaceful mountains and scenery. The foliage in this area of Pennsylvania is much different from areas like the Laurel Highlands. The forests are very untouched and considered old growth forests. No matter what time of year you visit the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon there are outdoor things to do!

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon- Colton Point State Park

Colton Point State Park is a beautiful state park that lines Pine Creek and provides amazing views of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon! Colton Point has many hiking trails and nice picnic areas!  The best part about visiting the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is that there are so many points to view it, and there are plenty of state parks nearby that you can partake in other outdoor activities!

Along the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is the Rail Trail, that was once the foundation for the Pine Creek & Buffalo Railroad that began operating here in 1883. It would carry timber to sawmills in towns along the gorge and coal to New York State. The last train passed through the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in October of 1988.

Galeton, Pennsylvania

During our weekend camping trip to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, we camped near the small town of Galeton on the border of Potter and Tioga Counties. Many of the small towns located near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon are very small, charming, and quaint.

Ole Bowl State Park

Ole Bowl State Park is another great, family-friendly state park near the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. Here, you can camp, hike, swim at the beach, fish, and picnic!

Cherry Springs State Park

Cherry Springs State Park is a very different park near the PA Grand Canyon. This park is well-known for its astronomy viewing! Cherry Spring is a gold level international dark sky park, making it an amazing place to see completely dark skies. There are many observatories on the property, campsites specific for stargazers, and plenty of open space for those not interested in staying overnight.

Lyman Run State Park

Lyman Run State Park is another great state park for all of your favorite outdoor activities. Here there is a lake for fishing, kayak and canoe rentals, and swimming. There are also multiple campsites, miles of hiking trails, and ATV trails. During the winter, you can ice skate, snowmobile, and sled at Lyman Run State Park.
